As some water wells age or are constantly and heavily worked, the well yield (gallons per minute or the rate at which water flows into the well) has a tendency to decrease. A drop in the flow or complete loss of water flowing into the well can at times occur even in relatively new wells due to a lowered water table from persistent drought or over-pumping of the well which can dewater the water-bearing aquifers, fractures and or zones. More often, reduced well yield over time can be traced to changes in the water well itself including:

  • Incrustation from mineral deposits
  • Bio-fouling by the growth of microorganisms
  • Physical plugging of the aquifer (the saturated layer of sand, gravel, or rock through which water is transmitted) by sediment
  • Sand pumping
  • Well screen or casing corrosion
  • Well – Borehole collapse
  • Pump damage

Significant and or noticeable changes in your well are a warning sign. Warning sign include:

  • Decreased pumping rate
  • Decreased water level
  • Decreased specific capacity
  • Decreased total depth of the well
  • Increased sand or sediment content of the incoming water
  • Increased cloudiness coming from the tap

When any of the above items occur, the solution lies in water well rehabilitation. Water well rehabilitation is the measures taken to correct one or any of the above well problems. A successful well rehabilitation will maximize the flow of water into the well once again.

Rehabilitation measures include but are not limited to:

  • Raising the well pump up higher in the well
  • Sleeving the well with a liner casing to seal out problem areas
  • Cleaning the borehole with an acid cleaning solution to remove specific types of mineral incrustation, biological fouling and physical plugging from clays, sands and silts
  • Cleaning – Re-drilling of the borehole to remove obstruction or clear a collapse
  • Hydrofracturing to increase yield which is a method of pressurizing a well using high pressure water injection to reopen and clear debris from clogged perforations (or open a new fissure of water entirely)
